ABOUT THE ART
This year we offer a collection of portraits.
Portraits drawn from imagination, structure, memory, and belief. They are markers of progress. Each one records what I understand now about the human skull, about likeness, about restraint, and about how much can be suggested without being explained. They are drawn in sanguine and pastel, crafted with the Mentler Méthode.
At their foundation is the skull. The skull is the vessel that holds the mind. It is the structure beneath expression. It is also a symbol of inner change. A reminder to embrace a path of spiritual growth and our understanding of the divine. In these drawings, the skull subtly becomes Saint Nicholas(The Wonderworker). Not as a costume, but as a presence.
The portraits appear solemn. Even melancholic. That is not accidental. I cannot make them happy. Their expressions reflect something truer to both the season and the history of portraiture. Renaissance subjects did not smile. A smile is a response, not an expression. It cannot be held. These faces are still because they are enduring.
A true reflection of a year gone by. There is fear in them. There is fatigue. Most importantly, there is also rising hope.
